Once you know your total rate:
Multiply the Purchase Amount by the applicable Sales Tax Rate to get the Sales Tax amount
Add the Sales Tax to the original Purchase Amount to find the Total Cost

Illinois exempts or lowers the tax rate on some items from sales tax to lessen the financial burden on consumers. Common exemptions and sales tax reductions2 include:
Most unprepared food items are taxed at a reduced rate of 1% rather than the full sales tax rate. Prepared foods are taxed at the full rate.
Medications prescribed by a licensed healthcare professional are taxed at a reduced rate of 1%.
Certain medical appliances, such as prosthetics and mobility aids, are taxed at a reduced rate of 1%.
Equipment used primarily in manufacturing or assembling tangible personal property for wholesale or retail sale or lease is exempt from sales tax. This exemption also includes production-related tangible personal property.
