New Jersey imposes a statewide sales tax rate of 6.625%. The state does not allow local municipalities to charge an additional sales tax; however, some jurisdictions may tax luxury items or tourism. For example, the Cape May Tourism Tax adds an extra 2% to the sale of room rentals and similar, bringing the total combined sales tax rate to 8.825%.

Some areas in New Jersey have reduced sales tax rates. These designated areas are called Urban Enterprize Zones and carry a specialized tax rate of 3.3125% to promote economic growth and job creation.

Calculating sales tax in New Jersey is easy, thanks to their straightforward tax rates. You’ll need the total purchase amount and the sales tax rate. Unless you’re in an Urban Enterprise Zone, the tax rate will be 6.625%.

What items are exempt from sales tax in New Jersey?

Florida, like many states, provides sales tax exemptions on specific items to ease the financial burden on residents. Commonly exempt items include:
